Dr.-Ing. Emma Singer is deputy head of the Institute for Textile and Fiber Technologies (ITFT) and responsible for teaching, student and doctoral supervision. The specialization of Dr.-Ing. Emma Singer is process and mechanical textile engineering with focus on technical and medical textiles. Her research and teaching activities over many years concentrate on knitted fabrics (weft and warp knitting). Since 2002 Dr.-Ing. Emma Singer takes part in teaching activities at the University of Stuttgart in the specializations textile engineering and biomedical process engineering as well as she organizes the lecture series on biomimetic.

Author or co-author of more than 30 scientific publications, of over 20 research reports, a lot of conference presentations and co-inventor on more than 10 patents and over 60 registered industrial designs.

Born 1958 in Almaty (former Alma-Ata), Kazakhstan (at that time Soviet Union).
In 1999 immigrated to Germany as ethnic German resettler.

Professional Education

1991 - 1994 State University of Technology and Design in Saint Petersburg (today State University of Industrial Technologies and Design in Saint Petersburg. Postgraduate study. Degree: Candidate of Technical Sciences (conform to German Dr.-Ing.).Topic of the doctorate thesis: Development of technology for manufacturing of knitted fabrics from combined fancy yarns.

1977 - 1982 Institute of Textile and Light Industry in Leningrad (today State University of Industrial Technologies and Design in Saint Petersburg). Study course: Textile engineering.
Specialization: Weft and warp knitting. Degree: Engineer. Graduate with distinction.

1973 - 1977 Technological College of Service and Light Industry in Alma-Ata (today State College of Service and Technologies in Almaty). Study course: Weft and warp knitting technologies. Degree: Technician. Graduate with distinction.

Work Experience

2015 - current Research Associate at the University of Stuttgart. Deputy Director of the Institute for Textile and Fiber Technologies (ITFT). Teaching, supporting the students and PhD candidates.

2002 - 2014 Research Associate at the Research Institute of Textile Technology and Process Engineering (ITV), part of the German Institutes of Textile and Fibre Research (DITF) in Denkendorf in the research field of technical textiles. Teaching and supporting the students in collaboration with University of Stuttgart.

2000 - 2001 Scientific Internship at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences at the Faculty of Mechanical and Process Engineering in Krefeld and at the Faculty of Textile and Clothing Technology in Mönchengladbach as a stipendiary of the Otto Benecke Foundation the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

1994 - 1999 Work activities in manufacturing, research and teaching in Kazakhstan, from that including 3.5 years as a lecturer for textile engineering at the Technological University in Almaty.

1982 - 1991 Work activities in manufacturing, research and teaching in Russia and in Kazakhstan, including 3.5 years as a research associate at the Kazakh State Technological Research Institute for Light Industry in Alma-Ata and 3 years as a lecturer for textile engineering at the Institute of Light and Food Industry in Alma-Ata (today Technological University in Almaty).
